Short history

1990, May

Petru VUTCĂRĂU, together with a group of young actors, founds the "Eugène Ionesco" Theater in Chisinau - the first independent theater in the Republic of Moldova.

1991, February 10

The theater goes, for a period of six months, to Romania and operates within the "Anton Pan" Theater in Râmnicu Vâlcea.

1991, August

The theater returns to Chișinău after completing its first tour. The performances of "Hello, Out There!" by W. Saroyan and "Waiting for Godot" by S. Beckett were staged on some of Romania's grandest stages: Târgu Mureș, Cluj-Napoca, Oradea, Timișoara, and Bucharest.

1991, September

The "Eugène Ionesco" theater acquires the status of a State Theater by Order no. 185 of 09.09.1991, signed by the Minister of Culture and Religion - Mr. Ion UNGUREANU.

1991, October 19

The theater opens its first season in Chisinau with the performance "The Bald Singer" by Eugen Ionescu.

1992, September

The theater embarks on its first international tour, participating in the International Experimental Theatre Festival in Cairo, Egypt, with the performance of "Waiting for Godot" by S. Beckett. The theater earns two prestigious awards: Best Performance Award and Best Male Role Award, given to Petru Vutcărău for his portrayal of Estragon.

1994, May

The theater organizes the first International Theater Festival in the Republic of Moldova - "Eugène Ionesco" Theater Biennial (BITEI).

1994, June

The first tour in France featured three performances at the Avignon Festival: "Waiting for Godot" by S. Beckett, "The Bald Soprano", and "Exit the King" by Eugène Ionesco.

1996, December

The first tour in Japan featured the performance of "Waiting for Godot" by S. Beckett. This was followed by five additional tours in Japan, with seven performances staged across nine cities, including Tokyo.

1994-2016

The theater has organized 12 editions of the International Theater Festival of the Republic of Moldova – "Eugène Ionesco" Theater Biennial (BITEI).

2016

The "Eugène Ionesco" Theater acquires the status of a National Theatre.

2018, March 23

The collective of the Theater unanimously signs the symbolic Declaration of Reunion with the Motherland - Romania.

Throughout its activity, the theater has participated in numerous festivals and tours across 16 countries: Romania, Russia, Ukraine, France, Italy, Estonia, Spain, the United Kingdom, Lithuania, Poland, Hungary, Japan, Egypt, Turkey, Pakistan, and South Korea.
