Synopsis
After more than thirty years, The Seagull by A. P. Chekhov returns to the stage of the National
Theatre "Eugène Ionesco"—this time in a new directorial vision by Nikita Betehtin. By drawing
on the mechanisms of theatricality and the stagecraft embedded within Chekhov’s comedic
structure, the director unveils a portrait of reality stripped of romantic illusions, false façades,
and the vain pretensions of uninspired artistic creation.
The Seagull presents not only the human longing to live fully, but also the difficult task of accepting life as it is—with its often harsh and brutal struggle for happiness and love, for recognition and admiration. The characters pursue their desires with desperation, perceiving their opportunities as the final gifts of fate. The sense of limitation within their hopes and expectations draws the condition of Chekhov's characters closer to our own time.
Simultaneously, Chekhov—through his characters—confronts us with the existential condition of the human being in the face of the vastness of the universe and the eternity beyond. Within this context, earthly conflicts and ambitions appear both trivial and absurd. Beneath the unchanging light of the moon, the events of daily life, the internal struggles and passions of characters aware of death’s inevitability, are rendered both pitiful and comic in their futility.
What, then, is happiness? And what do we truly risk in our pursuit of the joy promised by
existence? How can we discern what is truly meaningful from what is merely passing?
This new directorial interpretation of The Seagull by A. P. Chekhov seeks to lay bare the essence
of human conflict and passion—an absurd and poignant dance on the edge of the abyss,
fleeting beneath the eternal sky.

About the Director
Russian theater director, born on March 6, 1988 in Tyumen. Graduate of GITIS and MHAT Theater School. Founder of the "Burime" Youth Theater in Tyumen. He was a director at various theaters in Russia and abroad, participating in numerous international festivals.
Between 2019 and 2021, he was a director at the Krasnoyarsk Youth Theater and led the "Act 9" workshop at the Gogol Acting School in Moscow. With more than 25 shows in his portfolio, Betekhtin tackles social issues of youth in his productions based on contemporary texts. His installations explore the human interior and how people feel in an absurd world.
He has received various awards and scholarships, including the Russian Government Award for Young Artists in 2019.
In 2022, he left Russia due to persecution for his anti-war stance.
