The production King Lear is about a lullaby that was never sung when it was needed most...
Once Lear relinquishes his crown, the play begins to speak to us of a world in decay. Yet, before its final
disappearance, this world still exists—with its hierarchy, its beliefs, its rituals and ceremonies, the order
governing the relationships between power and the king's clan, between legitimate marriages and
adultery, between lawful children and bastards.
Two stories unfold hand in hand—Lear’s and Gloucester’s...
For them, everything around is nothing more than the incomprehensible echoes of a vanished world.
The world that falls apart in this production cannot be reassembled as it is in Shakespeare’s text. All the
characters become bleeding trunks—without branches, without roots, crippled orphans... Human trunks
that refuse to accept the absurdity of a world where life is lived only to give life, to kill, and to die. A
brother will abandon the brother he has killed, and there will be no new king. The stage remains
empty... just like the world itself.
When Lear loses his mind, he meets the blind Gloucester—these two human stumps already know
everything there is to know about themselves and about the world. Gloucester takes Lear’s boots, holds
them tightly in his arms and kisses them… perhaps as a final memory of the world that once was.
Like any Shakespearean play, this one too is like a sponge—capable of absorbing much, if not
everything.
Bertolt Brecht once wrote: “The theatre must find a way to vigorously defend the interests of its own
time.”
