The masterpiece of the American playwright Tennessee Williams (1911–1983), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (Pulitzer Prize for Drama, 1955), celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2024!
Over these seven decades, it has seen numerous stage productions, and in 1958, it was adapted into a film by Richard Brooks and James Po, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman as Maggie ("Cat") and Brick. This year, it makes its debut on the stage of the National Theatre "Eugène Ionesco," directed by Sergiu Chiriac, with a fitting cast: Maggie played by Laureana Țurcan and Brick by Maxim Chiriac.
The action unfolds in Big Daddy Pollitt's "plantation house in the Mississippi Delta," where the cotton magnate's family gathers. The relationships among the family members are anything but cordial, with the marriage between Big Daddy's son Brick and Maggie "Cat" on the brink of collapse. With remarkable clarity, the play explores themes that resonate with contemporary society—moral corruption, greed, superficiality, lies, hypocrisy, sexual desire, and ultimately, Love (with a capital L!) and death.
